Do You Think You Know The Meaning Of "419"?

419 is a house hold name in Nigeria when it relates to people who dupe other people of their hard earned money,belongings,etc in Nigeria.

When you ask a grandma in the village,she will tell you that,"The land you see over there is not for sell,anybody telling you to come and buy is a 419ner".

A young man was duped of his money in an ATM machine and he shouted,"NA 419 ooo".People take it as a slang or just a code but is it actually not?

These scams are often known as 'Nigerian 419' scams because the first wave of them came from Nigeria. The '419' part of the name comes from the section of Nigeria's Criminal Code which outlaws the practice. These scams now come from anywhere in the world. Here is where the number 419 is gotten from.

1:Section 419 of the Criminal Code Act. Defines and purnishes the offence of advance fee

fraud,Obtaining under false pretence.It was popularized during the Ibrahim Gbadamosi

Babangida Regime. Its not just a saying but a law in Nigeria.

2: Nigeria's constitution of criminal code section

4, subsection 1, paragraph 9 = 419 makes it easier to reference..

3: It is derived from the Nigerian Criminal Code

Act Part VI Section 419 chapter 38 (obtaining

under false pretences ; cheating) not the
