Sperm Vs Semen: Differences between them you probably never knew
For years I and probably you too have thought that the terms 'sperm' and 'semen' were just different names for the same thing: The sticky, milky fluid produced in male reproductive organs. However, curiosity led me to find out if they are the same thing or not, and the result: They are not.
So in this article, I'm going to be highlighting some key differences between sperm and semen. Enjoy!
1. Sperm is the name for the male reproductive cell which is transmitted into the female reproductive system through a process of sexual intercourse. Sperm cells are motile, meaning that they have the power to move spontaneously through the help of a flagellum. On the other hand, Semen refers to the whitish (or slightly grey or yellow in color), thick and sticky liquid that contains millions of sperm cells. Contained also, are other seminal plasma liquids which ensure viability of the fluid. Every ejaculation contains 2 to 5% volume of semen containing fluids that immerse the sperm cells, sustaining them ensuring motility till fetus formation.
2. Sperm cells are microscopic and not visible to the normal eye, while semen is a viscous liquid easily that is easily visible.
3. Sperm is the genetic bearer and is haploid, while semen has no such characteristic other than nourishing the sperm cells and keeping them motile.
