Meet Nigeria's First Millionaire, Da Rocha Who Sent His Dirty Clothes to UK for Laundry

Has it ever crossed your mind who nigeria's first millionaire was?, his name is Candido Da Rocha the son of Joao Esan Da Rocha.

Although Candido's father, Esan was originally from Ilesha but was also a returnee slave that came from brazil, he was captured and sold into slavery at age 10 to Brazilians in 1840. Esan returned to Nigeria in 1871 after he regained freedom, which led him to trace his origin to the Yoruba tribe Ilesha

After Esan settled down in Ilesha, he started a business empire after which he bought two houses in Lagos popularly known as the Water House and one other. Esan before returning to Nigeria, already has a son named Candido.

Candido Da Rocha was born in Brazil in the year 1860, it was said that he could only speak Ilesha and Portuguese language. Esan Da Rocha died on the 31st of December 1891. At age 25, Candido took over the administration and management of his late father’s estates in 1893.

Candido with an intention of expanding his Father's empire, ventured into water business, his net worth increased in the 1920s when the colonial administrators started paying Da Rocha to supply water to the whole of Lagos. His house having the first borehole in Nigeria also has the first water fountain.

His major breakthrough was in 1894 when a successful British Prospector sold gold bars to him for £6,000, he then approached First Bank which was the West African bank to acquire the loan that he used in purchasing the gold.

Candido was smart enough to file the gold bars into gold dust and sold it to the goldsmiths, making a profit of over double.

He established the Lagos Native Bank in 1907 with Sedu Williams and J.H. Doherty, which didn't last long because Da Rocha was duped. He later established the Lagos Finance Company that gave out credit facilities to people.

Da Rocha was rich to the extent that he and his family didn't wash their clothes in Nigeria. They always exported them to the UK for laundry. Some of them had about five dozens shirts, five dozens vests, five dozens pants, and anything they could afford.

Candido never married but had three women who bore a son, Alexander and four daughters for him.

Candido Da Rocha, the great Lagos Businessman died in 1959, and was buried at Ikoyi Cemetery.
