Forget Tinubu, Meet The Real Godfather of Politics In Nigeria

In his hey days, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu was the law and the government of Oyo State. He installed and removed as he pleased. He dared anyone to question his authority. And anyone who did instantly was shown the way out of office.

He owned the streets and in turn they did his bidding. Very interestingly, his kind of politics was not sophisticated at all. It was as crude as it comes. His brand of politics and political god-fatherism was popularly referred to as 'amala' politics, because of the way he was in the habit of feeding hundreds of Oyo citizens every Friday in his large compound in Molete.

Record has it that, every Friday hundreds of street urchins, the homeless, the needy and everyone who had need for food gathered at his compound and they never went away empty handed. They would be fed with the popular local delicacy in the South West, Amala and this with much gratitude. In turn, they owed him their loyalty and were at his beck and call to do his bidding.

Governors trembled at the mere mention of his name. He was powerful and he was never afraid to let anyone in doubt know that. Though un-schooled, he controlled whoever desired to get into the number one political office in Oyo state when he was alive. In turn, every governor had to pledge allegiance to him by willingly giving to him whatsoever he demanded as his share of the revenue to the government of the state.

The extent of his power was revealed when a now former governor dared to counter him and not hand over the finances of the state to him to do the way he wanted.

The face off between him and Governor Rashidi Ladoja will go down in the history of Nigeria as an epic one. It was a long drawn battle but at the end, the governor had to give in.

At the end it took a meeting jointly chaired by the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party,Chief Audu Ogbe and the Board of Trustess Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih to brocure peace between the duo.

In the giddy euphoria of the 'reconciliation', Adedibu was even quoted as saying, "I have no problem with my son; I made him Governor. I have no problems with the peace terms. I am a 78-year old man." And as expected, Ladoja, like the returning prodigal son, also replied: "I have always said it; I have no problem with Baba".

Such was the extent of his power, infact you can see that he was not just bold and confident about it, he never hesitated to show it. While Bola Tinubu still plays in the background and hasn't as much as said it openly ever acknowledged his being a god-father, Alhaji Adebibu openly flaunted it.
